Dr. Cynthia Daley is a nationally recognized leader in regenerative agriculture and the Director and Co-founder of the Center for Regenerative Agriculture & Resilient Systems at California State University, Chico. As an educator, researcher, and advocate, she has built a career advancing ecological farming systems, environmental literacy, and more resilient food and agricultural systems.
Raised in a multigenerational farming family in Illinois, Dr. Daley developed an early understanding of both the challenges and promise of agriculture. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and her doctorate from the University of California, Davis.
Since joining Chico State’s College of Agriculture in 1998, Dr. Daley has launched and guided pioneering efforts in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. In 2006, she founded the Regenerative/Organic Dairy Program in collaboration with leaders in the organic dairy
industry, establishing one of the first programs of its kind in the western United States. In 2016, she co-founded the Regenerative Agriculture Initiative and led its successful evolution into the Center for Regenerative Agriculture & Resilient Systems in 2019.
Today, the Center is a nationally respected hub for interdisciplinary research, producer education, student engagement, and policy outreach. Its work convenes faculty, farmers, ranchers, students, and community partners to advance practices that improve soil health, conserve water, sequester carbon, strengthen rural economies, and build agricultural resilience.
Dr. Daley previously served as Chico State’s Rawlins Endowed Professor for Environmental Literacy, championing education and outreach on environmental stewardship, sustainable food systems, and climate solutions. In 2024, she received the inaugural Gayle E. Hutchinson Presidential Award for Excellence, recognizing her visionary leadership and enduring contributions to innovation at Chico State.
Through her teaching, scholarship, and leadership, Dr. Daley continues to inspire the next generation of agricultural leaders within the agricultural industry.

Melissa Schuster is a longtime Paradise resident, community advocate, former Town Council Member, occasional troublemaker, and — somewhat unexpectedly — a distiller. In what she cheerfully calls her “twilight-years career,” Melissa has become a self-described Distillerista at Burnt Barn Distilling Co., the Paradise craft distillery she founded with her husband, Cliff, following the Camp Fire. She’ll share the unlikely story of how fire, reinvention, a little stubbornness, and a whole lot of learning led to a new chapter — one that, fortunately, comes with bourbon. |
