Gold Mining in Butte County

Ol' John Henry Westlund

Born October 28. 1931.

Novato was his home town. It was a nice little village until the Golden Gate Bridge was built and then it started to grow. A couple years later Hamilton Field Air Force base was established and explosive growth took place. John graduated from San Rafael High School in 1949 and joined the army in 1951. He married in 1956 and moved to Chico in 1957. John went on to buy a few acres in Butte Creek Canyon in 1958 and built a house by hand with no hand tools (it stood until November 8th, 2019). John spent the next 60 years enjoying beautiful Butte Creek and the fascinating history of the area. He paid the bills as a probation officer for a few years and the remainder of his career was spent as CSUC as a career placement officer - helping grads find their first job.

A great life in a beautiful place to live...

Announcements and Upcoming Events

Kelly Graves, a new member to Rotary recently fell ill but is home from the hospital now and doing much better. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers.

Brent Morrison and Ann Willman gave an update on our community service projects, noting our Fall work day will be at Degarmo Park. The club will work on beautifying the park. Starting at 7:30am - 9:30am. Please come with gloves and your favorite garden tool

Bob Bracewell let us know signups for Treat Street are coming soon!

• Team Report - September was a busy month for The Cruise Captains, with 3 new members added in the month, a team meeting, volunteering and attending The Boys and Girls Club Pasta in the Plaza. The Team is also working on a year long volunteer project where they bring and donate non-perishable food items to the Wildcat Pantry. October kicked off with a fun Oktoberfest social with the Esplanade Team at Mark and Kari Johnson’s house.

Fine Time and Recognition

Mark Page - Doing well after shoulder surgery! Mark’s wife, Laura recently started a new professional career working with The Town of Paradise as the Disaster Recovery Director. Although being super busy -- family and life is good!

Debbie Mosely - The Chocolate Festival that Debbie oversees is getting a ton of recognition for recently awarding $31,000 to local organizations. Debbie is also excited as it’s her grandkids first birthday! On top of that she is already gearing up for the next Chocolate festival on May 9th, 2020. In her spare time she’s working on a book called “Finding Hope in Paradise.”

Michelle Sereda - Life is busy and each day made extra fun with her husband and 11 year old son. LaHacienda, Michelle’s restaurant, is just about to wrap up a 2 year remodel and is super excited for the project to finally be complete.

Don Mulkey - Enjoys his days hanging out with the “grey boys” at Rotary. Don’s been doing well, enjoying life and has a great daughter who takes care of him. His advice to those in the club is “everyone needs a good woman in their life”.

Trivia

Anastacia Snyder-Lando won the trivia contest this week and earned herself an extra raffle ticket.

Raffle

The raffle pot was lost by Ken Jensen

New Members' Inductions

Chico Noon Rotary initiated two new members this week. We are proud to announce Candace Andel of Century 21 and returning Rotarian Ken Chase of Lifescapes.

Program

Tim O’Connell Introduced the two recent recipients of Camp Venture. Both presentations were very impressive --  one business included creating biodegradable and easy to read prescription bottles. The other, a credit/debit card that was ultra safe and would only work with the cardholders fingerprint.
