Matt York is the Executive Director of One Mobile Projector per Trainer (OMPT). He founded Videomaker Inc., a leading publisher on video production, in 1986 in Chico; the magazine’s readership exceeds 50,000 and the website surpasses 500,000 unique visitors monthly.

Matt founded OMPT in 2008 because of his genuine passion to make a difference in the developing world by bringing change through video. Matt’s expertise in video electronics led him to spearhead the design of small but rugged equipment suitable for use in remote areas in the world’s 70 poorest countries, which allows people living in disconnected communities to tell their own stories. OMPT’s interdisciplinary intervention empowers people to learn the most vital lessons including farming practices, health care, literacy and post-conflict reconciliation.

Announcements and Upcoming Events

Almanor weekend is Sept. 6-8 -- see Bill Chance.

The Club Picnic is Sept. 24 at Patrick Ranch. Kevin Moretti said, "No comment."

Oct. 16 is District 5160 Fall Seminar in Redding.

April 14, 2020: Centennial Kickoff Banquet featuring special guest Jennifer Jones.

May 3, 2020: Omelet Brunch.

Team Report: Robb Lightfoot gave his team’s report, and said that the Navigators are looking at four areas for their team projects. They’ll be participating in the Reading Pals program, reaching out to the Boys and Girls Club to offer project assistance, and getting involved in the early phases of the Rotary Centennial Park project. They may need help from other teams and will be reaching out as needed. Lightfoot also said that the team hopes to challenge themselves and other teams to augment the funds for the upcoming Target Shopping Spree organized by the Salvation Army. Finally, he presented President Glen and Secretary Mark with Navigator team shirts (below).

Polio Minute: The news out of Africa is that there have been no new cases for three years now. There are still scattered cases elsewhere. But the long-sought goal of eradication is close at hand, and Rotary has raised $100 million for the final push.

Scholarships: Tom Phelps, the Scholarship Committee chairman, reported on most recent awards. The Chico Noon Rotary Descendents college scholarship went to graduate student McKena Barker (daughter of Anita Barker), and the high school recipient is Drew Rodriguez (grandchild of Ed Anderson).

Fine Time and Recognition

Rob and Valerie Reddemann: The couple was congratulated for their recent anniversary. Pictures revealed that, in a pinch, Rob can be your tugboat; he ferried Val around Lake Shasta with a tether on his toe. Val noted that she was recovering from a minor shoulder surgery and is usually quite able to get about on her own. Rob has had a busy season at work and been busy with Rotaract, too. He also has been working at the Torres Shelter. Val reported that, in between long weekends and backyard work, she has been very busy with Town of Paradise. Life is full, fun, with good friends, and happy times. Glen gave them eight bells each.

Anita Barker: She was celebrated by her peers as  athletic director of the year. Along with supporting Chico State, she's a Milwaukee Brewers fan, as her son, Luke, has been called up to the AAA baseball team, the San Antonio Missions. Glen congratulated her and rang up eight bells.

Dan Herbert: He was outed as a Giants fan; some present booed, others cheered — and in true Rotary fashion, there was no official vote taken on whether the Brewers or the Giants or other teams, which shall not be named, reign supreme. Dan has enjoyed a visit from his daughter and family who live in Brooklyn, NY. Dan has been able to spent a lot of quality time with granddaughter Winnie. He noted that, for his father, 65 was the time to retire — but not for Dan. He’s having too much fun to quit. He will celebrate his 40-year anniversary on September 8, and was recognized with five bells.

Raffle

The raffle pot was $533. Tim O'Connell pulled the 7 of diamonds, immediately flashing the international sign for “loser” — but he didn’t leave until Glen coughed up his consolation $20.

Program

Sandra Knight, Vice Chairperson of the Mechoopda band of the Maidu Tribe (and a former Chico Noon Rotarian), spoke about the Maidu Living Village plan. They did not get grant, but the band is still looking for other funding. After a long legal process, they have obtained a Class 3 gaming license and have plans for construction on a temporary casino. Recent rains swelled a pond and triggered an additional environmental study. Knight also talked about how the Mechoopda are participating in the process of recovery after the Camp Fire and working to preserve and curate historic artifacts that have been uncovered during debris removal.
