Announcements and Upcoming Events
· January 28: Rotary Birthday Party & Announcement of President-Elect-Elect, noon.
· February 1: Paradise Rotary Crab Feed, 5:30 p.m., Elks Lodge. Anastacia Snyder Lando is selling Wine Raffle tickets, $20 apiece. Anastacia said our Club collected more than 100 bottles for the drawing, and she thanked all those who contributed. President Glen said that he heard from Brian Gray, President of Paradise Rotary, that they have about 150 tickets to the Crab Feed still available.
· February 4: Chico City Council meeting regarding Centennial Park funds; be there at 6 p.m.
· March 14: Chico Sunrise St. Patrick’s Day Gala, 5:30 p.m. at Chico State's BMU.
· April 4: Spring Work Day at Centennial Park.
· April 7: no meeting (see item above).
· April 14: Centennial Kickoff Event, speaker will be Rotary International Trustee Jennifer Jones.
· May 3: Omelet Brunch. President Glen said that this is a vital event, and he expects all hands on deck. We need to staff this without relying so much on outside volunteers as has happened in years past.
· Visiting Rotarian Dave Cox announced the birth of his granddaughter, Shea James Steinberg, born January 12. Daughter Lindsay Steinberg’s newborn infant weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces. (We'll pass the glass when Lindsay returns!)
· Team standings are unchanged. Team Esplanade is still in the lead and the Cruse Captains are right behind them. The leaders are followed by Team Velocity and Backroads, with the Navigators in the rear. Glen challenged the Backroads and Navigators to step up and put some pressure on the leaders.
· Correct answer to the trivia question was that women constitute roughly 1/3 of Chico Noon Rotary’s membership. The winner, drawn from correct answers, was Shelby Chase.
· Robb Lightfoot gave the Team Report. The Navigators met on January 10, when they discussed gathering the remaining bills related to the Jeff Shepard bench and using the Team’s budget to repay Pat Conroy. The Navigators also are working on helping to landscape the Honey Run Bridge. This process is on brief hold, awaiting FEMA approval.
Fine Time and Recognition
Rene Vercruyssen and his wife, Ethel, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year, and enjoy their nine grand-children. Rene said one of his grandsons is going to the McGeorge School of Law, and this particular young man didn’t enjoy reading as a child. But Rene tutored him, using “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” and this sparked a love of reading that has carried the young man to his current success.
Calen Chapman is enjoying his new baby, Camden, and was a good sport when it came to having a Christmas picture taken—and shared on Facebook, so that it fell into the clutches of President Glen—of Caleb and his family all wearing matching pajamas.
Will Wilbur was called out for recognition, despite the fact that there are no known pictures of this man, at least on Facebook. Will said that there are pictures of his family on the Web, but Glen noted that the idea behind recognition is to celebrate the Rotarian. “Doesn’t anyone want to have their picture taken with you?” Glen asked. (A club photographer will have to help remedy that problem.)
Raffle.
Levi Russell’s ticket was pulled, but he did not win the $1,442 pot.
Still, $20 is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!
Program
Heather Short introduced three of the four high school students whom Chico Noon Rotary sponsored to attend last June’s Camp Royal: (pictured from left) Abe Del Real from Chico High, Jordan Bennett from Pleasant Valley, and Sarah Mendonca from Chico High. Heather said that the selection process is very competitive and applicants typically must have at least a 4.2 GPA to be in the running. All three thanked our Club for the opportunity, and spoke about their takeaways.
